Maha Chief Secy, DGP, CP fail to receive CJI BR Gavai, protocol broken

Chief Justice of India BR Gavai, during his first visit to Maharashtra after assuming the top judicial post, expressed disappointment over the absence of key state officials at the airport upon his arrival in Mumbai on Sunday.

While addressing a felicitation event organized by the Maharashtra-Goa Bar Council, CJI Gavai remarked that the Chief Secretary, Director General of Police, and Mumbai Police Commissioner were not present to receive him—something that, he noted, was against expected protocol when the CJI visits a state for the first time.

“Judiciary, legislature, and executive are the three pillars of democracy. All should respect each other. It is disappointing that senior Maharashtra officials did not maintain protocol,” CJI Gavai said at the event, expressing his concern in Marathi.

Before the felicitation ceremony, CJI Gavai visited Chaityabhoomi, the memorial of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar, and paid homage to the social reformer. The emotional connection with the place and the people was evident as the CJI spoke about his journey and the overwhelming support he continues to receive.

CJI Gavai grew emotional while thanking the people of Maharashtra. He said, “For 40 years I have received this immense love. Today's felicitation will always remain unforgettable.” He added that although many people across the state wanted to attend his oath-taking ceremony on May 14, he couldn't accommodate them all due to limitations.

He ended his address by reaffirming his commitment to justice and constitutional values, and called for mutual respect among all institutions of democracy.
